About the Fragrance
Launched in 1987, Rochas Byzance was conceived as a fragrance of opulence, pleasure and mystery. Rochas itself links the perfume to the lavish Parisian parties once hosted by Hélène and Marcel Rochas, and that sense of excess runs right through the original composition. A bright flash of aldehydes, citrus, carnation and cardamom gives way to an extravagant floral heart of tuberose, ylang-ylang, rose, jasmine and iris. Beneath it sits a warmer, softer foundation of sandalwood, heliotrope, amber, musk and vanilla. Vintage wearers frequently describe Byzance as floral-spicy, powdery, creamy and distinctly full-bodied — a fragrance with the scale and confidence of the late 1980s, but with a surprisingly smooth warmth once the opening settles. The Byzance name was revisited by Rochas in 2019, but this bottle belongs to the original 1987 fragrance, not the modern composition.
